9.12.13 - Join Us in NYC To Prepare for the October Action and Firestone Conference

Photo: Redstockings, Inc.
for more information on Redstockings see http://redstockings.org/

Thursday, Sept 12, 2013, from 6:30pm to 8:15pm
220 Fifth Avenue (at 26th Street), 5th floor, New York, NY (map)

In preparation for Redstockings' upcoming "Shulamith Firestone Women's Liberation Memorial Conference on What is To Be Done" on October 5, 2013, we will be reading Shulamith Firestone's article "The Women's Rights Movement in the U.S.: A New View" (article available here)1 that was published in 1968 in New York Radical Women's Notes from the First Year.

We will be using Consciousness Raising to answer the question posed by Redstockings: "What is your thinking now and has it changed on the causes of women's oppression? How and why has it changed?"

We will also be building off this summer's meetings to plan NWL's next zap action to push back against the obstacles that stand in the way of buying the Morning-After Pill.

Save the Date!
NWL's next zap action will be Sunday, October 27th

We need more information on whether the Morning-After Pill is being sold in stores and how it's being sold. Please fill out our survey (here) so that we will know which pharmacies are making it more difficult to buy the Morning-After Pill.

NWL Fall Tabling Events in Gainesville, FL

The Gainesville Chapter of National Women's Liberation will be tabling at the fall events listed below:

Women's Welcome Assembly, August 28, 2013, 7-9pm, Reitz Grand Ballroom, UF

  • 6:15pm-9:00pm

Labor Daze September 1, 2013, 5-10pm, Bo Diddley Plaza, downtown Gainesville

  • 3pm-5:30pm
  • 5:30pm-7:30pm
  • 7:30pm-10:00pm

Radical Rush at UF September 18-19, 11-2pm, Plaza of the Americas, UF

  • 10:30am-12:30pm
  • 12:30-2:00pm

At these tabling events, we'll be talking to women about how they can get involved with and join NWL, as well as talking about our upcoming fall organizing plans. The local chapter of NWL will be organizing against anti-woman and anti-abortion attacks. We have been reminded by Texas and North Carolina what kinds of legislation we will most likely face this fall, and our own Senator Marco Rubio has announced his plans to introduce a 20-week ban on abortions at the federal level. The right to birth control, including abortion, is a cornerstone of women’s freedom. Without an organized, strong, visible feminist movement making demands and keeping up the pressure, victories we’ve had on abortion, birth control, and health care will continue to be threatened. If we continue to lose ground, making new gains and going for more of the things that women really want and need will be next to impossible.

Please let us know if you're able to help by volunteering to join NWL organizers for a tabling shift or two. Contact Kendra Vincent at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or 352-575-0495.

Consciousness-Raising (C-R) is a tool that the Women's Liberation Movement adopted from the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, where it was called "telling it like it is." In C-R, women answer a question using examples from their personal lives, then the group uses these personal testimonies to draw conclusions about the political root of women's so-called "personal" problems.

Morning-After Pill Week of Action a Huge Success: Actions held from Coast to Coast

If the Obama Administration won’t put the Morning-After Pill on the shelf for everyone, women will!

From May 13th to 17th NWL, with the support of Women Organized to Resist and Defend ( WORD), held a week of action for women's self determination and ability to control our lives. Feminists in NYC, Gainesville FL, LA, Sacramento, San Francisco, New Haven, Washington D.C., Chicago, Albuquerque, Syracuse, North Carolina and San Diego dropped banners and held flashmobs in pharmacies, defying the Food and Drug Administration and putting the morning-after pill on the shelf for people of all ages.

For 10 years the Bush and Obama Administrations have held women's health hostage, going to absurd lengths to keep this safe form of birth control out of our hands. Most recently, on May 1st the Obama Administration announced it was appealing a federal judge's order to remove all age and point of sale restrictions on the morning-after pill. Read more on the history and sign the petition here.

For those who cannot attend, Live Streaming of the event is being made available by the Bob Graham Center for Public Service and will run the duration of the lecture starting at 6pm EST and can be accessed from their homepage: http://www.bobgrahamcenter.ufl.edu/

Celebrate International Women's Day with the Federation of Cuban Women and NYWL

On Tuesday, March 5, 2013, come celebrate International Women's Day with the Federation of Cuban Women.  In the U.S. we are still fighting for National Healthcare, Paid Family Leave and Universal Childcare; take this rare opportunity to hear from Cuban women what they have won through revolution and feminist struggle!
Tuesday, March 5, 2013
7:00- 9:00pm

220 Fifth Ave, 5th floor
btwn W 26th St and W 27th St (Take the N/R or 6 to 28th St stops)

NYWL past-chair advisor, Allison Guttu was able to meet with the Federation during a political tour of Cuba.  Guttu says, "Cuba has 45% women in Parliament, one of the highest in the world.  It was amazing to learn about the wins that women had achieved, as well as the challenges; for instance they have won family leave but are still fighting for men to take that leave.  I am so excited that the Federation is joining us again for International Women's Day."
The New York Chapter of National Women's Liberation is a feminist group for women who want to fight back against male supremacy and win more freedom for women.  We believe that change comes from a movement of everyday people.  Our meetings are open to all women.

Think women’s lives are no less important than men’s? Become a Dues-Paying Feminist!
