Is consumerism a major form of oppression of women?

April 21, 2015 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm EDT

Ellen Willis's 1969 paper ‘Consumerism' and Women takes on this widespread anti-woman misconception.

Join us for a study and discussion of the paper at our monthly meeting in April. We encourage participants to read the article, Consumerism and Women, before the meeting, but will also provide hard copies and time to review the piece in the meeting. The article is a gem from the Redstockings Women's Liberation Archives for Action.

For women, buying and wearing clothes and beauty aids is not so much consumption as it is work.” – Ellen Willis

On June 27-28, 1969, mostly under the name “Women's Liberation,” Redstockings activists flooded a New Left women's conference in New York City with a spate of new writings. Willis' piece was one of these “mimeographed thunderbolts,” and is still chock-full of relevant and insightful insights for today's feminist movement. Willis was a co-founder of Redstockings and a radical feminist thinker and writer. Read more of the history on the Redstockings website.
