A Consciousness-Raising for Women of Color

The Women of Color Caucus organized this event before NWL was created.

A Consciousness-Raising for Women of Color:

Children, Parenting and What We Really Want

How do we organize parenting in our families, communities and society? Who did most of the parenting in your house when you were growing up? Who does most of the parenting in your house now?

Come discuss these questions with other women of color from our personal experience and learn how programs like universal child care, universal health care and paid parental leave can benefit women of color and our families.

When: Saturday, February 18, 2006, 2:00-4:00 p.m.

Where: Wilhelmina Johnson Center, 321 NW 10th St

Cost: $5-10 suggested donation

This meeting is open to all women of color. We will use consciousness-raising as a tool to analyze our experiences with racism and sexism in our daily lives on the topics of children and parenting by answering the following questions:

Do you have children or want children? Why or why not? What factors did you weigh in making this decision? How did this decision affect your relationship (for instance with your partner, at work or school, with family or friends)?

If you've spent some time raising children (as a parent or caretaker) what were the costs and benefits to you? Do you think your experiences are similar or different from white women's experiences with children and parenting? If so, how?

No one will be turned away for inability to pay. Free childcare available on site.

Please RSVP by February 17 for transportation or childcare.

The Women of Color Caucus (WOCC) is an organizing think tank composed of women of color associated with Gainesville Women's Liberation and Redstockings of the Women's Liberation Movement. We believe that women of color must meet separately in order to address problems specifically affecting women of color.
