DESCRIPTION:NWL Proudly Presents a Screening of the Documentary\, She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry\, followed by a Panel Discussion to Celebrate Women’s History Month \nGainesville\, FL – National Women’s Liberation will be showing the documentary “She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry” on Tuesday\, March 15\, 2016 at the Wooly\, located at 20 North Main Street in downtown Gainesville.  Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the film starts at 7:00 p.m.  Tickets are $5 – $10 sliding scale. This event is co-sponsored by Gainesville Area National Organization for Women (NOW). \nA panel of guest speakers will immediately follow the film.  Guest speakers include:\n•    Kathie Sarachild\, who joined the female liberation movement in 1967\, working with New York Radical Women. Her radical feminist speeches and writings continue to be reprinted in anthologies. Today she is director of the Redstockings Women’s Liberation Archives for Action.\n•    Gwendolyn Zoharah Simmons\, who worked as a Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) project leader during Mississippi Freedom Summer\, 1964 and is currently a professor of African American and Religious Studies at the University of Florida.\n•    Kendra Vincent\, who is a feminist organizer for National Women’s Liberation (NWL) and the chair of the Florida chapter. She is a public high school English teacher and the elected secretary for Alachua County Education Association.\n•    Whitney Mutch\, who is a graduate of Florida State University\, where she studied and taught Philosophy. She also holds a B.A. from Agnes Scott College in Philosophy and Classical Languages. Ms. Mutch is the President for the Gainesville chapter of NOW. \n“Knowing the particular women makes the movement very real. It provides real women and actual work to check against distortion\, the distortion which prevents women from knowing the movement’s sources\, knowing the groundwork and learning from it\,” said Kathie Sarachild. “For instance\, without knowing the particular women you cannot know that women did what they did quite deliberately and consciously\, operating on the basis of theory\, strategy\, and experience. You may think it was an accident of ‘history’ that those women achieved what they set out to achieve in the first stage of their plan.” \n“She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry” resurrects the buried history of the outrageous\, often brilliant women who founded the modern women’s movement from 1966 to 1971. The film\, directed by Mary Dore\, takes us from the founding of NOW\, with ladies in hats and gloves\, to the emergence of more radical factions of women’s liberation; from intellectuals like Kate Millett to the street theatrics of WITCH (Women’s International Conspiracy from Hell!). It does not shy away from controversies over race\, sexual preference and leadership that arose in the women’s movement\, and brilliantly captures the spirit of the time—thrilling\, scandalous\, and often hilarious. \nNational Women’s Liberation is a feminist group for women who want to fight back against male supremacy and win more freedom for women. We believe change comes about from the actions of everyday people. We are a new group with old roots; we come from a collaboration between organizers from Redstockings of the Women’s Liberation Movement (NY) and Gainesville (FL) Women’s Liberation that began in 1968.  We are funded by the dues of women\, not corporations or their foundations.

SUMMARY:NWL Co-sponsors Film Screening of "Made in Dagenham"
DESCRIPTION:Alachua County Labor Coalition is screening the film “Made in Dagenham” on Monday\, March 16\, at 7PM at the Civic Media Center\, 433 S. Main St. The Gainesville Chapter of National Women’s Liberation and Gainesville Area NOW will co-sponsor the event.\n\n“Made in Dagenham” is the 2010 film about female workers at the Ford Dagenham (England) car plant who walked out in protest against sexual discrimination. Their actions played a major role in the battle for equal pay\, both nationally and internationally. Although the women are skilled upholstery seamstresses\, they are classified as unskilled labor and paid a fraction of what the men make. While trying to address their grievances with the company\, the women become outraged by the lack of respect shown by the company. When their grievances go unanswered\, the 187 women workers go on strike. \n\nWith humor\, common sense and courage the women take on their bosses\, and increasingly belligerent local community\, and finally the government. Daring to stand up and push boundaries\, the women changed a system that no one wanted to admit was broken. \n\nActors include Bob Hoskins and Rosamund Pike.\n\nAlachua County Labor Coalition is screening the film ‘Made in Dagenham’ as part of their on-going series of monthly labor film showings in the Alachua County community. \n\nFree\, but donations appreciated.

DESCRIPTION:Over the next few months\, National Women’s Liberation will be working with Redstockings members and volunteers to revise and expand the organizer’s class: “Women’s Liberation: Where Do I Fit In?” This class was developed by Gainesville (FL) Women’s Liberation and Redstockings using literature from the Redstockings Women’s Liberation Archives for Action.\n\n\nRedstockings\, with NWL assistance\, will teach the class this coming September in NYC\, and this preparatory study and revision will strengthen the theory and lessons of the class.  The class is part of our work to build a grassroots movement of women to bring new fire to the fight for our liberation.\n\n\nJoin Us!\nOur final study and curriculum planning meeting will be Tuesday\, September 9 from 7 – 9pm. In Florida\, the meeting will be held at 1229 NW 12th Ave.\, Gainesville\, FL. SUMMARY:Women's Liberation: Where Do I Fit In?
DESCRIPTION:Four-week workshop series \nTuesdays in June\, 6:30-8:30 \n(June 3 through June 24) \nCost: $40 \n\nThis series is for women who want to understand truths and political causes of the unfairness in our lives; how a feminist movement was organized to change this;what we can do now to build the kind of movement that can put the male chauvinist establishment on the run again; and how each woman can contribute to that effort. \n\nYou will learn about the heroic struggle women have waged\, individually and collectively\, for our survival and our freedom. What lessons and strategies from women’s fighting history can we apply today? Through a combination of lecture\, discussion of readings*\, and consciousness-raising\, participants will learn about the radical ideas and methods that sparked the rebirth of the feminist movement in the 1960s. This class is not about personal liberation through improved self-esteem or an alternative women’s culture\, recalling a golden age of matriarchy\, or how feminism can save the planet. Nor is it about achieving status in the present corrupt system through individual self-improvement or lifestyle changes. \n\nThe following will be covered: \n• The fight for abortion as an example of how feminist gains have been won & lost. \n• The origins of the feminist movement and the how these truths have been buried. \n• Consciousness-raising: getting to the root of sexism. Who benefits? Who pays? \n• Radical feminist theory: What is radical? What is radical feminism? What is male supremacy? \n• Where can we go from here? \n\nCost includes reading materials. No one will be turned away for inability to pay. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, February 13\, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at Little Hall Room 119 (located on UF Campus) for a Consciousness-Raising Discussion on Abortion & Birth Control. \n\nConsciousness-Raising (C-R) is a tool that the Women’s Liberation Movement adopted from the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s\, where it was called “telling it like it is.” In C-R\, women answer a question using examples from their personal lives\, then the group uses these personal testimonies to draw conclusions about the political root of women’s so-called “personal” problems.

The local chapter of NWL will be organizing against anti-woman and anti-abortion attacks. We have been reminded by Texas and North Carolina what kinds of legislation we will most likely face this fall\, and our own Senator Marco Rubio has announced his plans to introduce a 20-week ban on abortions at the federal level. The right to birth control\, including abortion\, is a cornerstone of women’s freedom. Without an organized\, strong\, visible feminist movement making demands and keeping up the pressure\, victories we’ve had on abortion\, birth control\, and health care will continue to be threatened.
