SUMMARY:Join NWL-NYC for a Fundraiser and Feminist Get-together
DESCRIPTION:Join National Women’s Liberation NYC for an evening of live music\, activist tabling\, feminist swag\, tarot card readings\, and more! \nNow’s the time to build a strong women’s liberation movement. To be successful\, we need every day women—not corporations and their foundations—to fund it. As Redstockings wrote in 2000\, “This means an independent financial base\, for an independent women’s liberation movement … The power of “Sisterhood is Powerful” has always meant organized feminism…” \nNational Women’s Liberation is funded by dues-paying feminists\, and we need your support. Help us fight back against male supremacy and win more freedom for women! \nAdmission: $10 at the door\, all proceeds go to NWL. Cash only.

SUMMARY:Families Belong Together
DESCRIPTION:We are only as strong as our collective communities. \nJoin us this Saturday to protest family separation and detention at our southern border\, the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold Trump’s white supremacist Muslim Ban\, the erosion of decades of law that established domestic violence as a reason for women to seek asylum\, and ICE’s unrelenting and unrestrained attacks on immigrant communities of color. \nDuring a time when civil and human rights are generally under attack\, it is clear that the Trump administration\, its courts\, and law enforcement agencies are focusing with laser precision on Muslims\, Black and Latinx people\, and immigrant communities of color. These recent actions by the 1% keep power at the top: the billionaire class dilutes the power of the people by terrorizing marginalized groups and decimating our communities. \nEven those of us who aren’t targeted directly suffer from the government’s actions; we are being divided when we need to be fighting together for our freedom. Trump’s opportunity to appoint another justice to the Supreme Court makes it even more urgent for us to stand together against injustice and oppression. \nThe preservation of all liberation movements in the US hinges on our ability to act together. We must mobilize\, organize\, and stand with each other at this moment and in the difficult moments that are sure to follow. \nWe must fight together for our liberation; we must fight together until we win. \nJoin us this Saturday as we mobilize with our sisters and brothers in struggle. Look here to find a #FamiliesBelongTogether rally and protest near you. \nNYC \nFamilies Belong Together Rally and March\, NYC \nFoley Square @ 10AM \nNWL NYC will meet at 9:45AM at the northwest corner of Reade St and Lafayette St (in front of the Municipal Credit Union). Look for the NWL banner and t-shirts! \n  \nGainesville\, FL \nFamilies Belong Together Rally and March\, Alachua County \nCity Hall @ 5PM \nNWL GNV will meet at 5PM at the base of the clock tower at the corner of East University Ave and NE First St. Look for the NWL banner and t-shirts!

SUMMARY:NYC Health Care Consciousness-Raising Meetings
DESCRIPTION:The Abortion and Birth Control Committee is doing a series of Neighborhood Consciousness Raisings. \nWomen will be gathering to answer questions from our personal experience\, and then as a group we will compare the similarities and differences in the testimony in order to study our oppression. Movements have been using consciousness-raising as a tool for examining the political root of our so-called personal problems. We look at who is oppressing us\, who benefits\, and who pays\, and how to fight back. We will use the testimony and conclusions from these CRs to plan our work. \nWe’ll answer these questions – What are/were your reasons for wanting children or not wanting them? (whether we had them\, didn’t\, or are still planning to). Has your thinking changed? \nMeeting Details \n\nInwood | May 6th\, 2:00 PM *location has cats & stair-only access\nClinton Hill | May 19th\, 2:00 PM\nBushwick | May 20th | 4:00 PM *location has stair-only access\nBed Stuy | May 27th\, 4:00 PM *location has stair-only access\nUpper West Side/Morningside | June 3rd\, 4:00 PM *location has dogs/cats\nJamaica Estates\, Queens | June 24th\, 4:00 PM *location has stair-only access\n\nClick here to RSVP.

SUMMARY:National Consciousness-Raising
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, September 10\, women across the country will gather to answer the question\, “How would my life be different if we had guaranteed health care?” \nNational Women’s Liberation is expanding our Consciousness-Raising (CR) initiative to learn from women across the country and use what we learn to guide future actions.CR is a powerful tool used throughout the Women’s Liberation Movement\, and on September 10 we hope to use it to raise consciousness around health care and to build momentum for women’s liberation and a single payer health system. \nInterested in hosting a Consciousness-Raising in your community? We developed a CR Tool Kit and Reading Materials to get your started.

SUMMARY:National Consciousness-Raising Training Call
DESCRIPTION:National Women’s Liberation is expanding our Consciousness-Raising (CR) initiative to learn from women across the country and use what we learn to guide future actions. CR is a powerful tool used throughout the Women’s Liberation Movement\, and on September 10 we hope to use it to raise consciousness around health care and to build momentum for women’s liberation and a single payer health system. \nWe’re leading training calls for women who want to host a Consciousness-Raising session with friends and family about health care in their hometowns. \nUpcoming training call: Sunday\, August 27\, 8PM EDT / RSVP to Call In and Spread the word on Facebook! \nWhat is Feminist Consciousness-Raising? \nConsciousness-Raising (CR) is a tool that the Women’s Liberation Movement adopted from the 1960’s Civil Rights Movement’s practice of “telling it like it is.” In a CR\, women answer proposed questions using examples from their personal lives. The group draws conclusions based on that testimony to better understand the political root of problems that women face. Learn more about NWL’s use of CR here. \nSuggested Reading \nTo learn more about the history and theory of CR\, read Kathie Sarachild\, “Consciousness-Raising: A Radical Weapon\,” Feminist Revolution (Redstockings\, 1975).

SUMMARY:Women Strike
DESCRIPTION:STRIKE to protest Trump\, Pence\, and the Republican Congress’ ANTI-WOMAN Agenda \nNO WORK\, PAID OR UNPAID \nSign the pledge and share it with your friends: womenstrike.org \n  \nWhy did National Women’s Liberation call a women’s strike for the inauguration? \nWomen had many good reasons to strike before this election\, but now we have a president-elect who openly disrespects and assaults women\, and wants to limit our roles to servant\, mother\, or sexual plaything. This strike comes from anger at men in our lives who didn’t vote\, or who voted for Trump\, or who aren’t taking seriously the threat that his presidency represents. And it is a reaction to an election campaign that-apart from Bernie Sanders in the primary-ignored the universal programs that women and all people need\, and that work well in so many other countries\, from paid family leave to childcare to national health care. \nThe Democrats didn’t pursue these plans when they could have\, and now the Republican-majority Congress is promising to cut\, undermine\, privatize\, or eliminate every social contract from public schools to Medicare to Social Security. They expect the family (that is\, WOMEN) to fill in the gaps and pick up the pieces. NO WE WON’T. This strike is a warning. Our work can no longer be taken for granted. \nWhen we get 20\,000 signatures\, the strike will be ON.  Every pledge counts\, pledge today.

SUMMARY:In 2017\, Let's Continue Building the Resistance

SUMMARY:General Meeting
DESCRIPTION:To Have Children (Or Not): A Consciousness Raising\nMonthly Meeting February 16th 7:30-9:30pm (*note new start time) \nIn January we celebrated the anniversary of Roe v. Wade by doing a CR on when we have needed birth control and abortion.  In February\, we will dig deeper and explore whether we want or do not want children\, now or in the future\, and why. \nWe’ll be answering the following questions:\n1. What are our reasons for wanting children\, if/when we wanted them. (Whether we had them\, didn’t\, or are still planning to.) Reasons for not wanting them? If we had them\, did our thinking about this change after we had them? If we didn’t have them\, did our thinking change? \n2. Additional question for those who have done parenting work: When does this work feel like an individual responsibility? When does it feel like a collective (community\, society wide\,national) responsibility? \nDetails: Tuesday 2/16 from 7:30 – 9:30 pm @ The Commons in Brooklyn\, 388 Atlantic Avenue between Hoyt and Bond\, near the Hoyt-Schermerhorn Street A/C/G. You can also take the 2\,3\,4\,5 to Nevins or the D\,N\,R to Atlantic-Pacific. Map.

SUMMARY:#Shout Your Abortion in New York City
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tues.\, Nov. 17th from 7-9pm to learn about #ShoutYourAbortion in NYC and the history of abortion speak-outs. RSVP on facebook and invite your friends. \nThe #ShoutYourAbortion campaign that began in Seattle is spreading to the East Coast – come to our November meeting to learn more. We’ll also read and discuss a short article from the Redstockings Archives on the largely hidden history of how women won abortion in the U.S.: not because Supreme Court justices were nice to us\, but through speak outs\, disruptions\, and bold demands of women’s liberation organizers in NYC and beyond in the late 1960s. \nWe’ll be meeting at The Commons in Brooklyn\, 388 Atlantic Avenue between Hoyt and Bond\, near the Hoyt-Schermerhorn Street A/C/G. You can also take the 2\,3\,4\,5 to Nevins or the D\,N\,R to Atlantic-Pacific. Map.

DESCRIPTION:From the left\, Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) workers Doris Rutledge\, Gene Pinkston\, Judith Benninger (Brown)\, and Ira Simmons\, Gadsden County\, Florida\, August 1964.\nThis workshop is for women to learn about the roots of the Women’s Liberation Movement in the Civil Rights and Black Power Movements—and how this history can be used today. \n\nWhat were the positive lessons that gave women the tools to attack male supremacy?\nHow did Black women lead in the Women’s Liberation Movement and why is this not known?\nWhat did Black organizers tell white women that caused them to organize for Women’s Liberation?\n\nPlease e-mail nwl@womensliberation.org to reserve your spot and so that we can email you the readings in advance.  Space is limited so be sure to email and reserve your spot today. \nA $10 donation will be requested at the workshop. \n More on the workshop \nWith the growing movement against racist police murders and the rise of Black Lives Matter\, we think it’s a good moment to correct the myths about the history of Women’s Liberation and Black Liberation\, and study the lessons from this vital relationship for our organizing now. \nInstructor: Jenny Brown has been organizing for Women’s Liberation for 25 years\, with Gainesville (Florida) Women’s Liberation\, Redstockings\, and National Women’s Liberation.  She is co-author of the Redstockings book Women’s Liberation and National Health Care: Confronting the Myth of America\, and an author of Labor Notes book How to Jump-Start Your Union: Lessons from the Chicago Teachers. \nThis workshop is originally part of the 10-week class\, Building Women’s Liberation Now: Gems from the 60s and 70s for Activist Use Today\, we offered last year in cooperation with Redstockings (www.redstockings.org).  Please let us know if you would be interested in taking the 10-week class–we will offer it again if there is enough interest.

SUMMARY:General Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Women\, are you sick of being bombarded with advertisements that depict women as sexual objects? That use our bodies to sell products? That embolden men to disrespect us? That tell us we are not worthy unless we conform to unrealistic\, sexist\, racist\, and unhealthy beauty standards? \nSo are we! Join us and fight back. Attend our next meeting on Tues June 16th at 7pm. \nWhen: Tuesday\, June 16th from 7:00-9:00 p.m.\nWhere: The Commons in Brooklyn\, 388 Atlantic Avenue between Hoyt and Bond\, near the Hoyt-Schermerhorn Street A/C/G. You can also take the 2\,3\,4\,5 to Nevins or the D\,N\,R to Atlantic-Pacific. Map. \nRSVP: Encouraged but not required\, to nwl@womensliberation.org. \nNational Women’s Liberation and Redstockings recently teamed up to re-create the vintage 1969 “This Oppresses Women” sticker for slapping on sexist ads. The sticker is one of the “1960s gems” from the Redstockings Women’s Liberation Archives for Action. Help us plan a zap action using the stickers this summer. \nThe sticker was an outgrowth of our joint 10 week class\, “Building Women’s Liberation Now: Gems from the 1960s and Beyond for Radical Feminist Theory & Action Today.” Through consciousness-raising\, women testified about being fed up with men who feel entitled to harass us on the street\, tell us to smile\, and/or comment on our appearance. From there we dug deeper\, investigating the connection between street harassment and what corporate forces gain through the sexualization and exploitation of women in advertising plastered all over our public spaces. This summer we plan to raise consciousness publicly.

Willis’ piece was one of these “mimeographed thunderbolts\,” and is still chock-full of relevant and insightful insights for today’s feminist movement. Willis was a co-founder of Redstockings and a radical feminist thinker and writer. Read more of the history on the Redstockings website.

SUMMARY:"Building Women's Liberation Now" class to be offered in NYC
DESCRIPTION:Building Women’s Liberation Now: Gems from the 1960s & \nBeyond for Radical Feminist Theory & Action Today \nA joint project of Redstockings and National Women’s Liberation \n\n10 weekly sessions: Thursdays\, September 18th-November 20th\, 7-9pm \nFee: $45 (no one turned away for lack of funds) \nSign up: Registration is now closed. No walk-in registrations will be accepted on site. \n\n\nThis class is for women who want to understand basic truths and political causes of the unfairness in our daily lives; how a feminist movement was organized to change this; what we can do now to build the kind of movement that can put the male chauvinist establishment on the run again; and how each woman can contribute to that effort. \n\nYou will learn about the heroic struggle women have waged\, individually and collectively\, for our survival and our freedom. What lessons and strategies from women’s fighting history can we apply today? Through a combination of lecture\, discussion of readings*\, and consciousness-raising\, participants will learn about the radical ideas and methods that sparked the rebirth of the feminist movement in the 1960s. \n\nThis class is not about personal liberation through improved self-esteem or an alternative women’s culture\, recalling a golden age of matriarchy\, or how feminism can save the planet. Nor is it about achieving status in the present corrupt system through individual self-improvement or lifestyle changes. \n\nThe following will be covered:  \n• Reproductive Oppression and Reproductive Justice \n• The origins of the feminist movement and the how these truths have been buried \n• Consciousness-raising: getting to the root of sexism. Who benefits? Who pays? \n• Radical feminist theory: what is radical? What is radical feminism? What is male supremacy? \n• Planning an action to fight back \n\nVisit our website: www.womensliberation.org \nFollow us on Twitter: @4womenslib \nLike us on Facebook: facebook.com/nationalwomensliberation \n\n* Much of the material we’ll be using is from the Redstockings Women’s Liberation Archives for Action\, an archive that makes the formative and radical 1960’s experience of the movement more widely available. How and why has it changed?”\n\nWe will also be building off this summer’s meetings to plan NWL’s next zap action to push back against the obstacles that stand in the way of buying the Morning-After Pill. \n\nSave the Date!\nNWL’s next zap action will be Sunday\, October 27th \nWe need more information on whether the Morning-After Pill is being sold in stores and how it’s being sold. Please fill out our survey (here) so that we will know which pharmacies are making it more difficult to buy the Morning-After Pill.
