SUMMARY:General Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Women\, are you sick of being bombarded with advertisements that depict women as sexual objects? That use our bodies to sell products? That embolden men to disrespect us? That tell us we are not worthy unless we conform to unrealistic\, sexist\, racist\, and unhealthy beauty standards? \nSo are we! Join us and fight back. Attend our next meeting on Tues June 16th at 7pm. \nWhen: Tuesday\, June 16th from 7:00-9:00 p.m.\nWhere: The Commons in Brooklyn\, 388 Atlantic Avenue between Hoyt and Bond\, near the Hoyt-Schermerhorn Street A/C/G. You can also take the 2\,3\,4\,5 to Nevins or the D\,N\,R to Atlantic-Pacific. Map. \nRSVP: Encouraged but not required\, to nwl@womensliberation.org. \nNational Women’s Liberation and Redstockings recently teamed up to re-create the vintage 1969 “This Oppresses Women” sticker for slapping on sexist ads. The sticker is one of the “1960s gems” from the Redstockings Women’s Liberation Archives for Action. Help us plan a zap action using the stickers this summer. \nThe sticker was an outgrowth of our joint 10 week class\, “Building Women’s Liberation Now: Gems from the 1960s and Beyond for Radical Feminist Theory & Action Today.” Through consciousness-raising\, women testified about being fed up with men who feel entitled to harass us on the street\, tell us to smile\, and/or comment on our appearance. From there we dug deeper\, investigating the connection between street harassment and what corporate forces gain through the sexualization and exploitation of women in advertising plastered all over our public spaces. This summer we plan to raise consciousness publicly.

SUMMARY:Is consumerism a major form of oppression of women?
DESCRIPTION:Ellen Willis’s 1969 paper ‘Consumerism’ and Women takes on this widespread anti-woman misconception.\n\nJoin us for a study and discussion of the paper at our monthly meeting in April. We encourage participants to read the article\, Consumerism and Women\, before the meeting\, but will also provide hard copies and time to review the piece in the meeting. The article is a gem from the Redstockings Women’s Liberation Archives for Action.\n\nWhen:Tuesday April 21st from 6:30-8:30pm\nWhere:The Commons\, 388 Atlantic Avenue\, Brooklyn between Hoyt and Bond\, near the Hoyt-Schermerhorn Street A/C/G. You can also take the 2\,3\,4\,5 to Nevins or the D\,N\,R to Atlantic-Pacific. map\nRSVP: Encouraged but not required\, to nwl@womensliberation.org.\n\n“For women\, buying and wearing clothes and beauty aids is not so much consumption as it is work.” – Ellen Willis \n\nOn June 27-28\, 1969\, mostly under the name “Women’s Liberation\,” Redstockings activists flooded a New Left women’s conference in New York City with a spate of new writings. Willis’ piece was one of these “mimeographed thunderbolts\,” and is still chock-full of relevant and insightful insights for today’s feminist movement. Willis was a co-founder of Redstockings and a radical feminist thinker and writer. Read more of the history on the Redstockings website.

SUMMARY:"Building Women's Liberation Now" class to be offered in NYC
DESCRIPTION:Building Women’s Liberation Now: Gems from the 1960s & \nBeyond for Radical Feminist Theory & Action Today \nA joint project of Redstockings and National Women’s Liberation \n\n10 weekly sessions: Thursdays\, September 18th-November 20th\, 7-9pm \nFee: $45 (no one turned away for lack of funds) \nSign up: Registration is now closed. No walk-in registrations will be accepted on site. \n\n\nThis class is for women who want to understand basic truths and political causes of the unfairness in our daily lives; how a feminist movement was organized to change this; what we can do now to build the kind of movement that can put the male chauvinist establishment on the run again; and how each woman can contribute to that effort. \n\nYou will learn about the heroic struggle women have waged\, individually and collectively\, for our survival and our freedom. What lessons and strategies from women’s fighting history can we apply today? Through a combination of lecture\, discussion of readings*\, and consciousness-raising\, participants will learn about the radical ideas and methods that sparked the rebirth of the feminist movement in the 1960s. \n\nThis class is not about personal liberation through improved self-esteem or an alternative women’s culture\, recalling a golden age of matriarchy\, or how feminism can save the planet. Nor is it about achieving status in the present corrupt system through individual self-improvement or lifestyle changes. \n\nThe following will be covered:  \n• Reproductive Oppression and Reproductive Justice \n• The origins of the feminist movement and the how these truths have been buried \n• Consciousness-raising: getting to the root of sexism. Who benefits? Who pays? \n• Radical feminist theory: what is radical? What is radical feminism? What is male supremacy? \n• Planning an action to fight back \n\nVisit our website: www.womensliberation.org \nFollow us on Twitter: @4womenslib \nLike us on Facebook: facebook.com/nationalwomensliberation \n\n* Much of the material we’ll be using is from the Redstockings Women’s Liberation Archives for Action\, an archive that makes the formative and radical 1960’s experience of the movement more widely available. SUMMARY:Join Us For a Meeting in NYC to Analyze Feminist Victory and Plan for More
DESCRIPTION:From the morning-after pill victory to beating back the anti-abortion bill in Texas\, we’ve seen the power of grassroots organizing. Speakouts\, sit-ins\, flashmobs\, petitions\, and in-court advocacy led to a court order that the morning after pill be sold on the shelf with no age restrictions. The order is a huge victory for women\, but we must make sure the drug is affordable. Come analyze how and why we won this and brainstorm how to win more for women — help us plan an action for the fall. \n\nWe will discuss the 1970 essay “Abortion Law Repeal (Sort of): A Warning to Women1” by Lucinda Cisler\, which we can draw on to strengthen our fight for women’s liberation. A quote from the article: \n\n“Because no one else [except the Women’s Liberation Movement] is going to cry out against these restrictions\, it is up to feminists to make the strongest and most precise demands upon the lawmakers—who ostensibly exist to serve us. We will not accept insults and call them “steps in the right direction.” \n\n\n1 “Abortion Law Repeal (Sort of): A Warning to Women\,” © Lucinda Cisler. Reproduced here with author’s permission.

DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, March 5\, 2013\, come celebrate International Women’s Day with the Federation of Cuban Women.  In the U.S. we are still fighting for National Healthcare\, Paid Family Leave and Universal Childcare; take this rare opportunity to hear from Cuban women what they have won through revolution and feminist struggle!\n\nTuesday\, March 5\, 2013\n7:00- 9:00pm \n220 Fifth Ave\, 5th floor\, btwn W 26th St and W 27th St (Take the N/R or 6 to 28th St stops) \n\nNYWL past-chair advisor\, Allison Guttu was able to meet with the Federation during a political tour of Cuba.  Guttu says\, “Cuba has 45% women in Parliament\, one of the highest in the world.  It was amazing to learn about the wins that women had achieved\, as well as the challenges; for instance they have won family leave but are still fighting for men to take that leave.  I am so excited that the Federation is joining us again for International Women’s Day.”\n\nThe New York Chapter of National Women’s Liberation is a feminist group for women who want to fight back against male supremacy and win more freedom for women.  We believe that change comes from a movement of everyday people.  Our meetings are open to all women.
