SUMMARY:Birth Strike Teach-In
DESCRIPTION:Sign up through eventbrite \nLegislative attacks on abortion are heating up across the country\, and the recent leaked draft ruling revealed that the Supreme Court is likely to overturn Roe v. Wade this summer. If Roe v. We’ll start the talk and online session at noon. \nAll are welcome to attend regardless of whether you have read the book.

SUMMARY:NWL Women of Color Caucus CR
DESCRIPTION:RSVP here \nThe NWL Women of Color Caucus (WOCC) is hosting a community Consciousness-Raising (CR) on Sunday\, Nov. 14 from 3-5pm\, which will be a follow up to the COVID CR series that NWL hosted last year. This meeting is for women* of color only. RSVP required \nThe CR question we will be answering is: \nHow has the COVID-19 pandemic affected you? (health-wise\, economically\, etc.) Has it cost you anything? Have you gained anything? What support did you need during the pandemic that you got? What support did you need during the pandemic that you have not gotten? \nCR is is a tool that the Women’s Liberation Movement adopted from the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s\, where it was called “telling it like it is.” In C-R\, women answer a question using examples from their personal lives\, then the group uses these personal testimonies to draw conclusions about the political root of women’s so-called “personal” problems. \n*Cis women\, trans women\, and trans people who are oppressed as women who have a political priority in fighting male supremacy.

SUMMARY:Abortion Rights Now: Third General Meeting of 2021
DESCRIPTION:*RSVP on Eventbrite* \nIn light of the current court cases in Texas and Mississippi\, NWL will be devoting this month’s general meeting to a discussion of the current state of our fight for abortion rights. There will be brief presentations on the Texas case\, the Mississippi case\, the REMS restrictions on the abortion pill\, and the Women’s Health Protection Act currently before congress\, followed by a discussion on how our organizing should proceed. \nThe Women’s March is calling for nationwide marches in defense of our reproductive rights on October 2nd\, right before the Supreme Court reconvenes. NWL will have a presence at the New York and Florida marches; we will send you more details as they become available. \nFor more discussion on how we should fight for abortion rights\, NWL member Jenny Brown (author of Birth Strike and Without Apology) has written a piece for Jacobin magazine – It’s Time for Abortion Rights Activists to Push a Federal Abortion Rights Law. \n“To listen to the pundits\, you’d think there’s nothing that can be done. But our reproductive freedom is not at the mercy of this unelected panel of anti-abortion justices. In fact\, Congress could pass a law making abortion legal and available throughout the United States\, and there’s not much the Supreme Court or the Texas legislature could do about it.”

SUMMARY:Virtual Consciousness-Raising on Opposing Racism
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, Sept 29th\, 7:30-9:30pm\nRSVP required (meeting over Zoom)\n\nJoin National Women’s Liberation (NWL) for our upcoming virtual consciousness-raising (CR) on opposing racism. This CR is to draw political conclusions about how racism works and how to defeat it as a multiracial feminist fighting force. Please note\, this is not an anti-racist training. It is not about individual self improvement or improving our image. The primary goal of this CR is to help focus our efforts as we continue the fight to overthrow racism.\n\nIn CR women answer questions from their own experience\, and then the group uses these testimonies to find the political roots of women’s so-called “personal” problems.\n\nWe will answer these questions:\n\n\nHave you ever seen something racist or experienced racism and opposed it? What motivated you?\nHave you ever seen something racist or experienced racism and not opposed it? Give examples.\nHow has racism influenced your choices/decisions? (For example\, in the workplace\, in public\, social circles\, in political work\, interacting with white people\, etc.).\n\n\nPlease RSVP!

SUMMARY:You Can Change This Election: Learn How to Register Voters
DESCRIPTION:National Women’s Liberation is hosting a voter registration training at our office\, led by the Florida Immigrant Coalition (FLIC). We particularly want to reach people with felony convictions who are newly eligible to vote via Amendment 4\, as well as registered voters who are inactive. \nHere in Alachua County\, FLIC is aiming to reach and engage with 20\,000 voters this year. \n\nThere are tens-of-thousands who are newly-eligible under Amendment 4.\nOf the already registered voters\, roughly 40% don’t vote in general elections.\nOver 45\,000 voters in Alachua County are registered as No Party Affiliation (NPA).\nOver 18\,000 people were removed from the voting rolls in Alachua County for “inactivity\,” which is caused primarily by housing instability.\n\nWe have work to do! Join us for the training and to plan next steps!

SUMMARY:Families Belong Together
DESCRIPTION:We are only as strong as our collective communities. \nJoin us this Saturday to protest family separation and detention at our southern border\, the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold Trump’s white supremacist Muslim Ban\, the erosion of decades of law that established domestic violence as a reason for women to seek asylum\, and ICE’s unrelenting and unrestrained attacks on immigrant communities of color. \nDuring a time when civil and human rights are generally under attack\, it is clear that the Trump administration\, its courts\, and law enforcement agencies are focusing with laser precision on Muslims\, Black and Latinx people\, and immigrant communities of color. These recent actions by the 1% keep power at the top: the billionaire class dilutes the power of the people by terrorizing marginalized groups and decimating our communities. \nEven those of us who aren’t targeted directly suffer from the government’s actions; we are being divided when we need to be fighting together for our freedom. Trump’s opportunity to appoint another justice to the Supreme Court makes it even more urgent for us to stand together against injustice and oppression. \nThe preservation of all liberation movements in the US hinges on our ability to act together. We must mobilize\, organize\, and stand with each other at this moment and in the difficult moments that are sure to follow. \nWe must fight together for our liberation; we must fight together until we win. \nJoin us this Saturday as we mobilize with our sisters and brothers in struggle. Look here to find a #FamiliesBelongTogether rally and protest near you. \nNYC \nFamilies Belong Together Rally and March\, NYC \nFoley Square @ 10AM \nNWL NYC will meet at 9:45AM at the northwest corner of Reade St and Lafayette St (in front of the Municipal Credit Union). Look for the NWL banner and t-shirts! \n  \nGainesville\, FL \nFamilies Belong Together Rally and March\, Alachua County \nCity Hall @ 5PM \nNWL GNV will meet at 5PM at the base of the clock tower at the corner of East University Ave and NE First St. Look for the NWL banner and t-shirts!

SUMMARY:National Consciousness-Raising Training Call
DESCRIPTION:National Women’s Liberation is expanding our Consciousness-Raising (CR) initiative to learn from women across the country and use what we learn to guide future actions. CR is a powerful tool used throughout the Women’s Liberation Movement\, and on September 10 we hope to use it to raise consciousness around health care and to build momentum for women’s liberation and a single payer health system. \nWe’re leading training calls for women who want to host a Consciousness-Raising session with friends and family about health care in their hometowns. \nUpcoming training call: Sunday\, August 27\, 8PM EDT / RSVP to Call In and Spread the word on Facebook! \nWhat is Feminist Consciousness-Raising? \nConsciousness-Raising (CR) is a tool that the Women’s Liberation Movement adopted from the 1960’s Civil Rights Movement’s practice of “telling it like it is.” In a CR\, women answer proposed questions using examples from their personal lives. The group draws conclusions based on that testimony to better understand the political root of problems that women face. Learn more about NWL’s use of CR here. \nSuggested Reading \nTo learn more about the history and theory of CR\, read Kathie Sarachild\, “Consciousness-Raising: A Radical Weapon\,” Feminist Revolution (Redstockings\, 1975).

SUMMARY:Community Meeting for Women of Color
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, April 27\, 2017\, 7:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. \nThis meeting is open to all women of color. \nRSVP for Meeting Location \n\nThe Republicans in Congress and the incoming administration quickly got to work trying to undo the Affordable Care Act. Though the repeal was defeated\, the attack on public health care continues at the federal level and in many states. Meanwhile\, the New York State Senate is considering a health care bill that would cover all residents\, regardless of income\, marital status\, employment\, or citizenship status. If passed\, no one who needed care would go without it. \n\nAt this month’s Women of Color Caucus meeting\, we will use consciousness-raising to explore our own experiences with health care by answering the following questions: \n1.    What have you and/or your family gotten from the current health care system that you needed? \n2.    What have you needed that you haven’t gotten from the current health care system? \n3.    What do you want your health care to be like? Why? \n  \n\n*CR questions courtesy of Redstockings.
