SUMMARY:Families Belong Together
DESCRIPTION:We are only as strong as our collective communities. \nJoin us this Saturday to protest family separation and detention at our southern border\, the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold Trump’s white supremacist Muslim Ban\, the erosion of decades of law that established domestic violence as a reason for women to seek asylum\, and ICE’s unrelenting and unrestrained attacks on immigrant communities of color. \nDuring a time when civil and human rights are generally under attack\, it is clear that the Trump administration\, its courts\, and law enforcement agencies are focusing with laser precision on Muslims\, Black and Latinx people\, and immigrant communities of color. These recent actions by the 1% keep power at the top: the billionaire class dilutes the power of the people by terrorizing marginalized groups and decimating our communities. \nEven those of us who aren’t targeted directly suffer from the government’s actions; we are being divided when we need to be fighting together for our freedom. Trump’s opportunity to appoint another justice to the Supreme Court makes it even more urgent for us to stand together against injustice and oppression. \nThe preservation of all liberation movements in the US hinges on our ability to act together. We must mobilize\, organize\, and stand with each other at this moment and in the difficult moments that are sure to follow. \nWe must fight together for our liberation; we must fight together until we win. \nJoin us this Saturday as we mobilize with our sisters and brothers in struggle. Look here to find a #FamiliesBelongTogether rally and protest near you. \nNYC \nFamilies Belong Together Rally and March\, NYC \nFoley Square @ 10AM \nNWL NYC will meet at 9:45AM at the northwest corner of Reade St and Lafayette St (in front of the Municipal Credit Union). Look for the NWL banner and t-shirts! \n  \nGainesville\, FL \nFamilies Belong Together Rally and March\, Alachua County \nCity Hall @ 5PM \nNWL GNV will meet at 5PM at the base of the clock tower at the corner of East University Ave and NE First St. Look for the NWL banner and t-shirts!

SUMMARY:National Consciousness-Raising
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, September 10\, women across the country will gather to answer the question\, “How would my life be different if we had guaranteed health care?” \nNational Women’s Liberation is expanding our Consciousness-Raising (CR) initiative to learn from women across the country and use what we learn to guide future actions.CR is a powerful tool used throughout the Women’s Liberation Movement\, and on September 10 we hope to use it to raise consciousness around health care and to build momentum for women’s liberation and a single payer health system. \nInterested in hosting a Consciousness-Raising in your community? We developed a CR Tool Kit and Reading Materials to get your started.

SUMMARY:National Consciousness-Raising Training Call
DESCRIPTION:National Women’s Liberation is expanding our Consciousness-Raising (CR) initiative to learn from women across the country and use what we learn to guide future actions. CR is a powerful tool used throughout the Women’s Liberation Movement\, and on September 10 we hope to use it to raise consciousness around health care and to build momentum for women’s liberation and a single payer health system. \nWe’re leading training calls for women who want to host a Consciousness-Raising session with friends and family about health care in their hometowns. \nUpcoming training call: Sunday\, August 27\, 8PM EDT / RSVP to Call In and Spread the word on Facebook! \nWhat is Feminist Consciousness-Raising? \nConsciousness-Raising (CR) is a tool that the Women’s Liberation Movement adopted from the 1960’s Civil Rights Movement’s practice of “telling it like it is.” In a CR\, women answer proposed questions using examples from their personal lives. The group draws conclusions based on that testimony to better understand the political root of problems that women face. Learn more about NWL’s use of CR here. \nSuggested Reading \nTo learn more about the history and theory of CR\, read Kathie Sarachild\, “Consciousness-Raising: A Radical Weapon\,” Feminist Revolution (Redstockings\, 1975).

SUMMARY:Community Meeting for Women of Color
DESCRIPTION:At this month’s Women of Color Caucus meeting\, join us as we continue last month’s discussion on how to move our work forward as activists and as a woman of color think tank. During last month’s meeting\, WOCC advisory board member Zoharah Simmons presented on her experience at the Words of Fire Conference: Sex\, Power and the Black Feminist Call for Social Justice. If you missed last month’s meeting\, it is not too late to join in this discussion. We will provide a highlight of the discussion points from our last meeting so we can continue and dive deeper into some of the points raised. \n\nWe will continue discussing two readings from “Words of Fire: An Anthology of African-American Feminist Thought\,” ed. by Beverly Guy-Sheftall: \n1. “A Feminist Statement\,” by The Combahee River Collective \n2. “Age\, Race\, Class and Sex: Women Redefining Difference”\, by Audre Lorde

SUMMARY:Community Meeting for Women of Color
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, April 27\, 2017\, 7:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. \nThis meeting is open to all women of color. \nRSVP for Meeting Location \n\nThe Republicans in Congress and the incoming administration quickly got to work trying to undo the Affordable Care Act. Though the repeal was defeated\, the attack on public health care continues at the federal level and in many states. Meanwhile\, the New York State Senate is considering a health care bill that would cover all residents\, regardless of income\, marital status\, employment\, or citizenship status. If passed\, no one who needed care would go without it. \n\nAt this month’s Women of Color Caucus meeting\, we will use consciousness-raising to explore our own experiences with health care by answering the following questions: \n1.    What have you and/or your family gotten from the current health care system that you needed? \n2.    What have you needed that you haven’t gotten from the current health care system? \n3.    What do you want your health care to be like? Why? \n  \n\n*CR questions courtesy of Redstockings.

SUMMARY:Community Meeting for Women of Color
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, March 21st at 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. \nThis meeting is open to all women of color. \nRSVP for Meeting Location \n\nJoin us for a reading discussion and consciousness-raising meeting to discuss what you think the feminist movement should be fighting on right now. \n\nIn the words of human rights activist Loretta Ross\, “Our ability to control what happens to our bodies is constantly challenged by poverty\, racism\, environmental degradation\, sexism\, homophobia\, and injustice in the United States.” \n\nThe current administration\, with the Republicans and Donald Trump at the helm and the ineffectual Democrats on the side-lines\, is determined to cut reproductive health services for women and to expand criminalization of black and brown people. We want to fight for justice and genuine respect\, and we understand that individual solutions will not fix collective problems\, or change the power structure. \n\nIn the words of Black Lives Matters founder Alicia Garza\, “If our movement is not serious about building power\, then we are just engaged in a futile exercise of who can be the most radical.”  Join us for a reading discussion and consciousness-raising meeting to discuss what you think the feminist movement should be fighting on right now. \n\nWe will answer the following questions: \n\nWhat are your thoughts now on what has to be done to win women’s freedom? Has your thinking changed\, and if so\, how and why has it changed? What are you doing now to make this happen?\nAre you currently involved in organizing? Are you currently involved in an organization? Why or why not\, and which one and why?*\n\n\nWe will be reading and discussing the following reading: National Women’s Liberation: What We Want\, What We Believe. We borrowed the formulation “What We Want\, What We Believe” from the Ten-Point Program of the Black Panther Party (1966). \n\n*CR question courtesy of Redstockings. \n

SUMMARY:Women Strike
DESCRIPTION:STRIKE to protest Trump\, Pence\, and the Republican Congress’ ANTI-WOMAN Agenda \nNO WORK\, PAID OR UNPAID \nSign the pledge and share it with your friends: womenstrike.org \n  \nWhy did National Women’s Liberation call a women’s strike for the inauguration? \nWomen had many good reasons to strike before this election\, but now we have a president-elect who openly disrespects and assaults women\, and wants to limit our roles to servant\, mother\, or sexual plaything. This strike comes from anger at men in our lives who didn’t vote\, or who voted for Trump\, or who aren’t taking seriously the threat that his presidency represents. And it is a reaction to an election campaign that-apart from Bernie Sanders in the primary-ignored the universal programs that women and all people need\, and that work well in so many other countries\, from paid family leave to childcare to national health care. \nThe Democrats didn’t pursue these plans when they could have\, and now the Republican-majority Congress is promising to cut\, undermine\, privatize\, or eliminate every social contract from public schools to Medicare to Social Security. They expect the family (that is\, WOMEN) to fill in the gaps and pick up the pieces. NO WE WON’T. This strike is a warning. Our work can no longer be taken for granted. \nWhen we get 20\,000 signatures\, the strike will be ON.  Every pledge counts\, pledge today.

SUMMARY:Celebrate International Women's Day with the Federation of Cuban Women and NYWL
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, March 5\, 2013\, come celebrate International Women’s Day with the Federation of Cuban Women.  In the U.S. we are still fighting for National Healthcare\, Paid Family Leave and Universal Childcare; take this rare opportunity to hear from Cuban women what they have won through revolution and feminist struggle!\n\nTuesday\, March 5\, 2013\n7:00- 9:00pm \n220 Fifth Ave\, 5th floor\, btwn W 26th St and W 27th St (Take the N/R or 6 to 28th St stops) \n\nNYWL past-chair advisor\, Allison Guttu was able to meet with the Federation during a political tour of Cuba.  Guttu says\, “Cuba has 45% women in Parliament\, one of the highest in the world.  It was amazing to learn about the wins that women had achieved\, as well as the challenges; for instance they have won family leave but are still fighting for men to take that leave.  I am so excited that the Federation is joining us again for International Women’s Day.”\n\nThe New York Chapter of National Women’s Liberation is a feminist group for women who want to fight back against male supremacy and win more freedom for women.  We believe that change comes from a movement of everyday people.  Our meetings are open to all women.
