SUMMARY:Join Us in NYC To Prepare for the October Action and Firestone Conference
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, Sept 12\, 2013\, from 6:30pm to 8:15pm\n220 Fifth Avenue (at 26th Street)\, 5th floor\, New York\, NY (map)\n\nIn preparation for Redstockings’ upcoming “Shulamith Firestone Women’s Liberation Memorial Conference on What is To Be Done” on October 5\, 2013\, we will be reading Shulamith Firestone’s article “The Women’s Rights Movement in the U.S.: A New View” (article available here)1 that was published in 1968 in New York Radical Women’s Notes from the First Year.\n\nWe will be using Consciousness Raising to answer the question posed by Redstockings: “What is your thinking now and has it changed on the causes of women’s oppression? How and why has it changed?”\n\nWe will also be building off this summer’s meetings to plan NWL’s next zap action to push back against the obstacles that stand in the way of buying the Morning-After Pill. \n\nSave the Date!\nNWL’s next zap action will be Sunday\, October 27th \nWe need more information on whether the Morning-After Pill is being sold in stores and how it’s being sold. Please fill out our survey (here) so that we will know which pharmacies are making it more difficult to buy the Morning-After Pill.

SUMMARY:NWL Fall Tabling Events in Gainesville\, FL
DESCRIPTION:The Gainesville Chapter of National Women’s Liberation will be tabling at the fall events listed below: \n\nWomen’s Welcome Assembly\, August 28\, 2013\, 7-9pm\, Reitz Grand Ballroom\, UF \n\n6:15pm-9:00pm\n\nLabor Daze September 1\, 2013\, 5-10pm\, Bo Diddley Plaza\, downtown Gainesville \n\n3pm-5:30pm\n5:30pm-7:30pm\n7:30pm-10:00pm\n\nRadical Rush at UF September 18-19\, 11-2pm\, Plaza of the Americas\, UF \n\n10:30am-12:30pm\n12:30-2:00pm\n\n\nAt these tabling events\, we’ll be talking to women about how they can get involved with and join NWL\, as well as talking about our upcoming fall organizing plans. The local chapter of NWL will be organizing against anti-woman and anti-abortion attacks. We have been reminded by Texas and North Carolina what kinds of legislation we will most likely face this fall\, and our own Senator Marco Rubio has announced his plans to introduce a 20-week ban on abortions at the federal level. The right to birth control\, including abortion\, is a cornerstone of women’s freedom. Without an organized\, strong\, visible feminist movement making demands and keeping up the pressure\, victories we’ve had on abortion\, birth control\, and health care will continue to be threatened. If we continue to lose ground\, making new gains and going for more of the things that women really want and need will be next to impossible.\n\nPlease let us know if you’re able to help by volunteering to join NWL organizers for a tabling shift or two. Contact Kendra Vincent at gainesvillewomensliberation@gmail.com or 352-575-0495.

SUMMARY:Join Us For a Meeting in NYC to Analyze Feminist Victory and Plan for More
DESCRIPTION:From the morning-after pill victory to beating back the anti-abortion bill in Texas\, we’ve seen the power of grassroots organizing. Speakouts\, sit-ins\, flashmobs\, petitions\, and in-court advocacy led to a court order that the morning after pill be sold on the shelf with no age restrictions. The order is a huge victory for women\, but we must make sure the drug is affordable. Come analyze how and why we won this and brainstorm how to win more for women — help us plan an action for the fall. \n\nWe will discuss the 1970 essay “Abortion Law Repeal (Sort of): A Warning to Women1” by Lucinda Cisler\, which we can draw on to strengthen our fight for women’s liberation. A quote from the article: \n\n“Because no one else [except the Women’s Liberation Movement] is going to cry out against these restrictions\, it is up to feminists to make the strongest and most precise demands upon the lawmakers—who ostensibly exist to serve us. We will not accept insults and call them “steps in the right direction.” \n\n\n1 “Abortion Law Repeal (Sort of): A Warning to Women\,” © Lucinda Cisler. Reproduced here with author’s permission.

SUMMARY:Celebrate International Women's Day with the Federation of Cuban Women and NYWL
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, March 5\, 2013\, come celebrate International Women’s Day with the Federation of Cuban Women.  In the U.S. we are still fighting for National Healthcare\, Paid Family Leave and Universal Childcare; take this rare opportunity to hear from Cuban women what they have won through revolution and feminist struggle!\n\nTuesday\, March 5\, 2013\n7:00- 9:00pm \n220 Fifth Ave\, 5th floor\, btwn W 26th St and W 27th St (Take the N/R or 6 to 28th St stops) \n\nNYWL past-chair advisor\, Allison Guttu was able to meet with the Federation during a political tour of Cuba.  Guttu says\, “Cuba has 45% women in Parliament\, one of the highest in the world.  It was amazing to learn about the wins that women had achieved\, as well as the challenges; for instance they have won family leave but are still fighting for men to take that leave.  I am so excited that the Federation is joining us again for International Women’s Day.”\n\nThe New York Chapter of National Women’s Liberation is a feminist group for women who want to fight back against male supremacy and win more freedom for women.  We believe that change comes from a movement of everyday people.  Our meetings are open to all women.
