SUMMARY:Community Meeting for Women of Color
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, April 27\, 2017\, 7:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. \nThis meeting is open to all women of color. \nRSVP for Meeting Location \n\nThe Republicans in Congress and the incoming administration quickly got to work trying to undo the Affordable Care Act. Though the repeal was defeated\, the attack on public health care continues at the federal level and in many states. Meanwhile\, the New York State Senate is considering a health care bill that would cover all residents\, regardless of income\, marital status\, employment\, or citizenship status. If passed\, no one who needed care would go without it. \n\nAt this month’s Women of Color Caucus meeting\, we will use consciousness-raising to explore our own experiences with health care by answering the following questions: \n1.    What have you and/or your family gotten from the current health care system that you needed? \n2.    What have you needed that you haven’t gotten from the current health care system? \n3.    What do you want your health care to be like? Why? \n  \n\n*CR questions courtesy of Redstockings.

SUMMARY:Community Meeting for Women of Color
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, March 21st at 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. \nThis meeting is open to all women of color. \nRSVP for Meeting Location \n\nJoin us for a reading discussion and consciousness-raising meeting to discuss what you think the feminist movement should be fighting on right now. \n\nIn the words of human rights activist Loretta Ross\, “Our ability to control what happens to our bodies is constantly challenged by poverty\, racism\, environmental degradation\, sexism\, homophobia\, and injustice in the United States.” \n\nThe current administration\, with the Republicans and Donald Trump at the helm and the ineffectual Democrats on the side-lines\, is determined to cut reproductive health services for women and to expand criminalization of black and brown people. We want to fight for justice and genuine respect\, and we understand that individual solutions will not fix collective problems\, or change the power structure. \n\nIn the words of Black Lives Matters founder Alicia Garza\, “If our movement is not serious about building power\, then we are just engaged in a futile exercise of who can be the most radical.”  Join us for a reading discussion and consciousness-raising meeting to discuss what you think the feminist movement should be fighting on right now. \n\nWe will answer the following questions: \n\nWhat are your thoughts now on what has to be done to win women’s freedom? Has your thinking changed\, and if so\, how and why has it changed? What are you doing now to make this happen?\nAre you currently involved in organizing? Are you currently involved in an organization? Why or why not\, and which one and why?*\n\n\nWe will be reading and discussing the following reading: National Women’s Liberation: What We Want\, What We Believe. We borrowed the formulation “What We Want\, What We Believe” from the Ten-Point Program of the Black Panther Party (1966). \n\n*CR question courtesy of Redstockings. \n

SUMMARY:Women Strike
DESCRIPTION:STRIKE to protest Trump\, Pence\, and the Republican Congress’ ANTI-WOMAN Agenda \nNO WORK\, PAID OR UNPAID \nSign the pledge and share it with your friends: womenstrike.org \n  \nWhy did National Women’s Liberation call a women’s strike for the inauguration? \nWomen had many good reasons to strike before this election\, but now we have a president-elect who openly disrespects and assaults women\, and wants to limit our roles to servant\, mother\, or sexual plaything. This strike comes from anger at men in our lives who didn’t vote\, or who voted for Trump\, or who aren’t taking seriously the threat that his presidency represents. And it is a reaction to an election campaign that-apart from Bernie Sanders in the primary-ignored the universal programs that women and all people need\, and that work well in so many other countries\, from paid family leave to childcare to national health care. \nThe Democrats didn’t pursue these plans when they could have\, and now the Republican-majority Congress is promising to cut\, undermine\, privatize\, or eliminate every social contract from public schools to Medicare to Social Security. They expect the family (that is\, WOMEN) to fill in the gaps and pick up the pieces. NO WE WON’T. This strike is a warning. Our work can no longer be taken for granted. \nWhen we get 20\,000 signatures\, the strike will be ON.  Every pledge counts\, pledge today.

SUMMARY:Sexism and the Election
DESCRIPTION:Are you sick of women being judged by what we wear? How we sound? Coverage of the Clinton campaign has laid bare sexist double standards on a national scale. At our October meeting we will discuss the “damned if you\, damned if you don’t” moments we experience in our own lives\, and how we can create a stronger feminist movement to change this. \nDetails: The Commons in Brooklyn\, 388 Atlantic Avenue between Hoyt and Bond\, near the Hoyt-Schermerhorn Street A/C/G. SUMMARY:"Women's Liberation: Where Do I fit In?" A 10-Week Class in Fall 2016
DESCRIPTION:Wednesdays\, September 28-December 7 (excluding 11/23)\, 6:30-9:30pm \nFEE: $40 for members\, $50 nonmembers (includes readings)\, No one turned away for lack of funds \nTO REGISTER: Email nwl@womensliberation.org \nThis class is for women who want to understand basic truths and political causes of the unfairness in our daily lives; how a feminist movement was organized to change this; what we can do now to build the kind of movement that can put the male chauvinist establishment on the run again; and how each woman can contribute to that effort. \nYou will learn about the heroic struggle women have waged\, individually and collectively\, for our survival and our freedom. What lessons and strategies from women’s fighting history can we apply today? Through a combination of lecture\, discussion of readings*\, and consciousness-raising\, participants will learn about the radical ideas and methods that sparked the rebirth of the feminist movement in the 1960s. \nThis class is not about personal liberation through improved self-esteem or an alternative women’s culture\, recalling a golden age of matriarchy\, or how feminism can save the planet. Nor is it about achieving status in the present corrupt system through individual self-improvement or lifestyle changes. \nThe following will be covered:\n•    The origins of the feminist movement and the how these truths have been buried.\n•    Consciousness-raising: getting to the root of sexism. Who benefits? Who pays?\n•    Radical feminist theory: what is radical? What is radical feminism? What is male supremacy?\n•    Reproductive Labor and Reproductive Justice\n•    Planning an action to fight back

SUMMARY:#NotMyClinic Day of Action
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Day of Action: \nMonday\, August 1 from 12:30 – 2:30 \n200 NE 1st Street Suite 201\, Gainesville\, FL 32601 \n\nAre you tired of the Florida legislature telling you what to do with your body? Are you mad about Florida’s newest abortion restrictions? Governor Rick Scott signed HB 1411 into law in March\, and the only reason it hasn’t gone into effect yet is because a Federal Judge granted a preliminary injunction against the bill. But an injunction is not enough! Because HB 1411 may still go into effect\, it still risks the lives and freedom of women across the state of Florida. \nThis injunction came in the wake of the United States Supreme Court striking down a similar abortion restrictions bill in Texas in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt this June. However\, the Supreme Court’s ruling was narrow enough to allow room for further creative law making by anti-woman politicians across the country. While Whole Woman’s Health decision is a small victory for women and our right to abortion\, it is not enough. It is not repeal. It is reform\, which keeps us fighting against restrictions and defending against more attacks. Until we achieve total repeal of all abortion laws\, our freedom as women is at stake! We demand repeal of all abortion laws\, including HB 1411! \nIf HB 1411 goes into effect and most abortion clinics across the state\, including Planned Parenthood clinics\, have to close their doors\, the Florida legislature has referred women to a list of “Federally Qualified Health Centers” for our reproductive health and abortion needs. Not a single one of these centers provides abortions. These centers also do not provide many other reproductive services that clinics like Planned Parenthood provide\, including cancer screenings\, STD testing\, birth control options\, etc. These centers are insufficient. These centers are #notmyclinic! That is why National Women’s Liberation is calling on YOU to help us show Governor Scott and the Florida legislature why we will not stand for HB 1411 or any other abortion restrictions they try to throw our way. \nWe demand reproductive freedom! We demand control over our bodies! We demand repeal!
