SUMMARY:Women Strike
DESCRIPTION:STRIKE to protest Trump\, Pence\, and the Republican Congress’ ANTI-WOMAN Agenda \nNO WORK\, PAID OR UNPAID \nSign the pledge and share it with your friends: womenstrike.org \n  \nWhy did National Women’s Liberation call a women’s strike for the inauguration? \nWomen had many good reasons to strike before this election\, but now we have a president-elect who openly disrespects and assaults women\, and wants to limit our roles to servant\, mother\, or sexual plaything. This strike comes from anger at men in our lives who didn’t vote\, or who voted for Trump\, or who aren’t taking seriously the threat that his presidency represents. And it is a reaction to an election campaign that-apart from Bernie Sanders in the primary-ignored the universal programs that women and all people need\, and that work well in so many other countries\, from paid family leave to childcare to national health care. \nThe Democrats didn’t pursue these plans when they could have\, and now the Republican-majority Congress is promising to cut\, undermine\, privatize\, or eliminate every social contract from public schools to Medicare to Social Security. They expect the family (that is\, WOMEN) to fill in the gaps and pick up the pieces. NO WE WON’T. This strike is a warning. Our work can no longer be taken for granted. \nWhen we get 20\,000 signatures\, the strike will be ON.  Every pledge counts\, pledge today.

SUMMARY:Sexism and the Election
DESCRIPTION:Are you sick of women being judged by what we wear? How we sound? Coverage of the Clinton campaign has laid bare sexist double standards on a national scale. At our October meeting we will discuss the “damned if you\, damned if you don’t” moments we experience in our own lives\, and how we can create a stronger feminist movement to change this. \nDetails: The Commons in Brooklyn\, 388 Atlantic Avenue between Hoyt and Bond\, near the Hoyt-Schermerhorn Street A/C/G. SUMMARY:"Women's Liberation: Where Do I fit In?" A 10-Week Class in Fall 2016
DESCRIPTION:Wednesdays\, September 28-December 7 (excluding 11/23)\, 6:30-9:30pm \nFEE: $40 for members\, $50 nonmembers (includes readings)\, No one turned away for lack of funds \nTO REGISTER: Email nwl@womensliberation.org \nThis class is for women who want to understand basic truths and political causes of the unfairness in our daily lives; how a feminist movement was organized to change this; what we can do now to build the kind of movement that can put the male chauvinist establishment on the run again; and how each woman can contribute to that effort. \nYou will learn about the heroic struggle women have waged\, individually and collectively\, for our survival and our freedom. What lessons and strategies from women’s fighting history can we apply today? Through a combination of lecture\, discussion of readings*\, and consciousness-raising\, participants will learn about the radical ideas and methods that sparked the rebirth of the feminist movement in the 1960s. \nThis class is not about personal liberation through improved self-esteem or an alternative women’s culture\, recalling a golden age of matriarchy\, or how feminism can save the planet. Nor is it about achieving status in the present corrupt system through individual self-improvement or lifestyle changes. \nThe following will be covered:\n•    The origins of the feminist movement and the how these truths have been buried.\n•    Consciousness-raising: getting to the root of sexism. Who benefits? Who pays?\n•    Radical feminist theory: what is radical? What is radical feminism? What is male supremacy?\n•    Reproductive Labor and Reproductive Justice\n•    Planning an action to fight back

SUMMARY:#NotMyClinic Day of Action
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Day of Action: \nMonday\, August 1 from 12:30 – 2:30 \n200 NE 1st Street Suite 201\, Gainesville\, FL 32601 \n\nAre you tired of the Florida legislature telling you what to do with your body? Are you mad about Florida’s newest abortion restrictions? Governor Rick Scott signed HB 1411 into law in March\, and the only reason it hasn’t gone into effect yet is because a Federal Judge granted a preliminary injunction against the bill. But an injunction is not enough! Because HB 1411 may still go into effect\, it still risks the lives and freedom of women across the state of Florida. \nThis injunction came in the wake of the United States Supreme Court striking down a similar abortion restrictions bill in Texas in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt this June. However\, the Supreme Court’s ruling was narrow enough to allow room for further creative law making by anti-woman politicians across the country. While Whole Woman’s Health decision is a small victory for women and our right to abortion\, it is not enough. It is not repeal. It is reform\, which keeps us fighting against restrictions and defending against more attacks. Until we achieve total repeal of all abortion laws\, our freedom as women is at stake! We demand repeal of all abortion laws\, including HB 1411! \nIf HB 1411 goes into effect and most abortion clinics across the state\, including Planned Parenthood clinics\, have to close their doors\, the Florida legislature has referred women to a list of “Federally Qualified Health Centers” for our reproductive health and abortion needs. Not a single one of these centers provides abortions. These centers also do not provide many other reproductive services that clinics like Planned Parenthood provide\, including cancer screenings\, STD testing\, birth control options\, etc. These centers are insufficient. These centers are #notmyclinic! That is why National Women’s Liberation is calling on YOU to help us show Governor Scott and the Florida legislature why we will not stand for HB 1411 or any other abortion restrictions they try to throw our way. \nWe demand reproductive freedom! We demand control over our bodies! We demand repeal!

SUMMARY:NWL Screening of "She's Beautiful When She's Angry"
DESCRIPTION:NWL Proudly Presents a Screening of the Documentary\, She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry\, followed by a Panel Discussion to Celebrate Women’s History Month \nGainesville\, FL – National Women’s Liberation will be showing the documentary “She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry” on Tuesday\, March 15\, 2016 at the Wooly\, located at 20 North Main Street in downtown Gainesville.  Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the film starts at 7:00 p.m.  Tickets are $5 – $10 sliding scale. This event is co-sponsored by Gainesville Area National Organization for Women (NOW). \nA panel of guest speakers will immediately follow the film.  Guest speakers include:\n•    Kathie Sarachild\, who joined the female liberation movement in 1967\, working with New York Radical Women. Her radical feminist speeches and writings continue to be reprinted in anthologies. Today she is director of the Redstockings Women’s Liberation Archives for Action.\n•    Gwendolyn Zoharah Simmons\, who worked as a Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) project leader during Mississippi Freedom Summer\, 1964 and is currently a professor of African American and Religious Studies at the University of Florida.\n•    Kendra Vincent\, who is a feminist organizer for National Women’s Liberation (NWL) and the chair of the Florida chapter. She is a public high school English teacher and the elected secretary for Alachua County Education Association.\n•    Whitney Mutch\, who is a graduate of Florida State University\, where she studied and taught Philosophy. She also holds a B.A. from Agnes Scott College in Philosophy and Classical Languages. Ms. Mutch is the President for the Gainesville chapter of NOW. \n“Knowing the particular women makes the movement very real. It provides real women and actual work to check against distortion\, the distortion which prevents women from knowing the movement’s sources\, knowing the groundwork and learning from it\,” said Kathie Sarachild. “For instance\, without knowing the particular women you cannot know that women did what they did quite deliberately and consciously\, operating on the basis of theory\, strategy\, and experience. You may think it was an accident of ‘history’ that those women achieved what they set out to achieve in the first stage of their plan.” \n“She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry” resurrects the buried history of the outrageous\, often brilliant women who founded the modern women’s movement from 1966 to 1971. The film\, directed by Mary Dore\, takes us from the founding of NOW\, with ladies in hats and gloves\, to the emergence of more radical factions of women’s liberation; from intellectuals like Kate Millett to the street theatrics of WITCH (Women’s International Conspiracy from Hell!). It does not shy away from controversies over race\, sexual preference and leadership that arose in the women’s movement\, and brilliantly captures the spirit of the time—thrilling\, scandalous\, and often hilarious. \nNational Women’s Liberation is a feminist group for women who want to fight back against male supremacy and win more freedom for women. We believe change comes about from the actions of everyday people. We are a new group with old roots; we come from a collaboration between organizers from Redstockings of the Women’s Liberation Movement (NY) and Gainesville (FL) Women’s Liberation that began in 1968.  We are funded by the dues of women\, not corporations or their foundations.

SUMMARY:General Meeting
DESCRIPTION:To Have Children (Or Not): A Consciousness Raising\nMonthly Meeting February 16th 7:30-9:30pm (*note new start time) \nIn January we celebrated the anniversary of Roe v. Wade by doing a CR on when we have needed birth control and abortion.  In February\, we will dig deeper and explore whether we want or do not want children\, now or in the future\, and why. \nWe’ll be answering the following questions:\n1. What are our reasons for wanting children\, if/when we wanted them. (Whether we had them\, didn’t\, or are still planning to.) Reasons for not wanting them? If we had them\, did our thinking about this change after we had them? If we didn’t have them\, did our thinking change? \n2. Additional question for those who have done parenting work: When does this work feel like an individual responsibility? When does it feel like a collective (community\, society wide\,national) responsibility? \nDetails: Tuesday 2/16 from 7:30 – 9:30 pm @ The Commons in Brooklyn\, 388 Atlantic Avenue between Hoyt and Bond\, near the Hoyt-Schermerhorn Street A/C/G. You can also take the 2\,3\,4\,5 to Nevins or the D\,N\,R to Atlantic-Pacific. Map.

SUMMARY:#Shout Your Abortion in New York City

We’ll also read and discuss a short article from the Redstockings Archives on the largely hidden history of how women won abortion in the U.S.: not because Supreme Court justices were nice to us\, but through speak outs\, disruptions\, and bold demands of women’s liberation organizers in NYC and beyond in the late 1960s. \nWe’ll be meeting at The Commons in Brooklyn\, 388 Atlantic Avenue between Hoyt and Bond\, near the Hoyt-Schermerhorn Street A/C/G. DESCRIPTION:From the left\, Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) workers Doris Rutledge\, Gene Pinkston\, Judith Benninger (Brown)\, and Ira Simmons\, Gadsden County\, Florida\, August 1964.\nThis workshop is for women to learn about the roots of the Women’s Liberation Movement in the Civil Rights and Black Power Movements—and how this history can be used today. \n\nWhat were the positive lessons that gave women the tools to attack male supremacy?\nHow did Black women lead in the Women’s Liberation Movement and why is this not known?\nWhat did Black organizers tell white women that caused them to organize for Women’s Liberation?\n\nPlease e-mail nwl@womensliberation.org to reserve your spot and so that we can email you the readings in advance.  Space is limited so be sure to email and reserve your spot today. \nA $10 donation will be requested at the workshop. \n More on the workshop \nWith the growing movement against racist police murders and the rise of Black Lives Matter\, we think it’s a good moment to correct the myths about the history of Women’s Liberation and Black Liberation\, and study the lessons from this vital relationship for our organizing now. \nInstructor: Jenny Brown has been organizing for Women’s Liberation for 25 years\, with Gainesville (Florida) Women’s Liberation\, Redstockings\, and National Women’s Liberation.  She is co-author of the Redstockings book Women’s Liberation and National Health Care: Confronting the Myth of America\, and an author of Labor Notes book How to Jump-Start Your Union: Lessons from the Chicago Teachers. \nThis workshop is originally part of the 10-week class\, Building Women’s Liberation Now: Gems from the 60s and 70s for Activist Use Today\, we offered last year in cooperation with Redstockings (www.redstockings.org).  Please let us know if you would be interested in taking the 10-week class–we will offer it again if there is enough interest.
